FITP PUBLISHES THE LATEST ESG EVENT REPORT FOR THE 2024 NITTO ATP FINALS, REITERATING ITS LONG-TERM COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY ON AND OFF THE COURT

The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) has published a first-of-its-kind ESG report in the sports sector for the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals ahead of Climate Week. The report aligns with FITP’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework, created in collaboration with Enovation Consulting, to implement new environmental, social and governance initiatives, ensure international best practice is integrated into the event, and demonstrate FITP’s effort in sustainability and responsible governance.
FITP engaged with key stakeholders, prior to the event to plan and implement a range of impactful initiatives aligned with the ESG framework. The successful delivery of these actions was made possible due to the collaborative action between FITP and its stakeholders, maximising the positive impacts generated by working collectively. The report outlines a timeline of FITP’s sustainability efforts since 2021, provides details of over 50 existing and new ESG initiatives that were implemented at the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals, presents a robust carbon footprint baseline for comparison against future events, and gives insights into FITP’s ambitions for future editions of the Nitto ATP Finals.
The 2024 Nitto ATP Finals was the first edition that incorporated environmental, social, and governance factors, having previously prioritised environmental initiatives. In alignment with best practice across the sector, social and governance initiatives were implemented with data collected to measure their impact. Some innovative initiatives that were implemented include:
- Over 2,500 children engaged through FITP’s Racchette in Classe project;
- 70% discount off tickets for spectators with disabilities for both the Nitto ATP Finals and the Fan Village;
- over 6,800 free tickets distributed to local schools and tennis clubs for practice sessions and the Grand Opening Show;
- 282,7 kg of surplus food donated to a designated charity, Banco AlimentareBroad communication and awareness on sustainability efforts undertaken to inform fans and general public;
- certificates of renewable energy used for the event
The carbon footprint was based on a comprehensive, robust methodology aligned with the GHG Protocol guidelines and ISO 20121 international standard. The activities measured for the carbon footprint included travel emissions, event logistics and transport, energy, purchased goods and services, and waste generated in operations.
This baseline will be used to assess the impact of future initiatives and has delivered useful insights into the sustainability of the event:
- The event produced a total carbon footprint of 953.97tCO2e
- Travel emissions represented 34% (324.92 tCO2e) of total event emissions primarily through air travel
- Energy accounted for 30% (289.29 tCO2e) of total emissions due to the use of generators
- Purchased goods and services resulted in 163.21 tCO2e (17%) of emissions mainly through service-related consumables
While this year's baseline highlighted the key areas of the 2024 event's carbon footprint, FITP implemented several measures to mitigate its environmental impact, including promoting sustainable fan mobility, using 100% certified renewable energy, and prioritising locally sourced food.
