German captured his second major title at US Open

Alexander Zverev has leapfrogged Jannik Sinner in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin after capturing his second major title at the US Open.

The 29-year-old downed American Ben Shelton in four sets on Sunday to join six-time major champ Boris Becker as the only German men in the Open Era (since 1968) to lift multiple Slam trophies.

Zverev has climbed to 8,650 points following his New York triumph and is now 700 points clear of Sinner atop the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, which serves as a barometer for who will claim ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours.

Zverev still remains at No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings and trails Sinner by 1,810 points. However, Zverev will drop just 1,080 points the rest of the season, while Sinner will drop 3,550 points. The German will therefore be in position to challenge Sinner if he finishes the season well.

Only two of the 29 members of the ATP No. 1 Club Members that have reached World No. 1 at an older age than Zverev is now (29 years, five months). Andy Murray was 29 years, six months in 2016, and John Newcombe was 30 years, 11 days in 1974.

Zverev is now 25-2 on the season at majors, having ended his long wait for Slam glory at Roland Garros in June, when he defeated Flavio Cobolli in five sets in the final. Before Zverev, Becker was the last German man to win a major when he triumphed at the Australian Open in 1996.

Zverev and Sinner will both compete at the Nitto ATP Finals, having already qualified for the prestigious year-end event, to be held from 15-22 November. Shelton is up to third in the Live Race To Turin after advancing to his first major final at Flushing Meadows. The 23-year-old made his debut in Italy last year.

Frances Tiafoe has also climbed following his US Open showing. The American is up two spots to sixth in the Live Race.
