Fritz in contention heading into Montreal

Rafael Jodar’s rapid rise continued at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, where he reached his maiden ATP 500 final.

By reaching the title match at the hard-court event, Jodar has surged firmly into Nitto ATP Finals qualification contention. The 19-year-old is up eight spots to 11th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, just 161 points behind eighth-placed Alex de Minaur, who is the final qualification spot.

During the prestigious year-end event last November, the Spaniard was still enrolled at the University of Virginia and had yet to compete at an ATP Tour event. The Spaniard cliched his first tour-level victory at the Next Gen ATP Finals in December in Jeddah, where, despite a round-robin exit, he defeated Learner Tien and Martin Landaluce.

Jodar has since surged to new heights in a standout 2026. The Spaniard won his maiden ATP Tour title in Marrakech, reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, and at ATP Masters 1000 events in Rome and Madrid.

If Jodar qualifies for the Nitto ATP Finals, he will be just the third player to have qualified for the season-end event the year after playing at the Next Gen ATP Finals. Stefanos Tsitsipas won the title in London in 2019 after triumphing in Milan in 2018, while Alcaraz qualified for the season finale in 2022 after winning the 20-and-under event in 2021.

Taylor Fritz has also increased his qualification hopes after winning the title in Washington. The American is up five places to 10th after lifting his first trophy of 2026.

The 28-year-old is trying to make his fourth appearance at the year-end event in Turin, where he advanced to the championship match in 2024. Fritz is part of a large group separated by just 375 points in the Live Race To Turin.

Record seven-time champion Novak Djokovic is sixth on 2,310 points, with Tommy Paul 14th on 1,935 points. Felix Auger-Aliassime, De Minaur, Fritz, Ben Shelton, Jodar, Jakub Mensik, Arthur Fils and Paul all head to the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal chasing points to boost their Nitto ATP Finals qualification chances.

Shelton and De Minaur both arrive off the back of quarter-final exits in Washington, while Auger-Aliassime will hope to ride home support to his first Masters 1000 crown. The hard-court event runs from 2-13 August, with Alexander Zverev and Auger-Aliassime the top two seeds.

Jannik Sinner has qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held from 15-22 November.
