Alcaraz extends lead in Live Race and battle for year-end No. 1

Carlos Alcaraz extended his lead in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin by winning the Roland Garros title on Sunday and in doing so put himself in good position in the battle for ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF leading into the second half of the season.
Alcaraz entered the clay-court major with a 1,090-point advantage over second-placed Jannik Sinner, the Italian star he faced in the final. The Spaniard saving three championship points before ultimately lifting the Coupe des Mousquetaires could prove pivotal in the battle for year-end No. 1.
PIF ATP Live Race To Turin (following Roland Garros)
Player | Points |
1) Carlos Alcaraz | 5,740 |
2) Jannik Sinner | 3,950 |
3) Alexander Zverev | 2,925 |
4) Jack Draper | 2,690 |
5) Lorenzo Musetti | 2,600 |
6) Novak Djokovic | 2,580 |
7) Casper Ruud | 2,075 |
8) Tommy Paul | 1,900 |
Had Sinner converted one of his opportunities, the standings would look drastically different. With a loss, Alcaraz would only have 5,040 points compared to 4,650 Sinner, which would have made the deficit just 390 points.
Instead, Alcaraz has a more sizable advantage leading into the grass-court season. However, things can change quickly on the ATP Tour and Sinner, who has won 47 of his past 50 matches according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index, could claw closer to his chief rival, who took an 8-4 lead in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series.
There is still plenty of season to go and fans will watch closely as Alcaraz, the 2022 ATP Year-end No. 1 presented by PIF, and Sinner, who earned the accolade last year, battle for top spot. The Live Race is the year-to-date standings and therefore is a good measuring stick to see where players stand in the pursuit of year-end No. 1.
Alcaraz and Sinner are both in excellent position to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals. There is only a 1,025-point gap between third-placed Alexander Zverev (2,925 points) — a two-time champion at the season finale — and eighth-placed Tommy Paul (1,900).
Fourth-placed Jack Draper (2,690), fifth-placed Lorenzo Musetti (2,600) and Paul are trying to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. Other players seeking their debut in Turin — 11th-placed Ben Shelton (1,710), 12th-placed Jakub Mensik (1,680), 13th-placed Francisco Cerundolo (1,675) and 14th-placed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (1,470) — will try to move into a qualifying spot during the grass-court season.
This year's Nitto ATP Finals will take place from 9-16 November at Inalpi Arena.
