Watch Dodig/Melo Hot Shot
Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo, the only team at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals not to have won a title during the regular season, have a shot at silverware.
On Sunday afternoon, they will contest the final showdown against top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan or fourth seeds Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
The seventh seeds fought back to beat Lukasz Kubot and Robert Lindstedt, the eighth seeds and this year’s Australian Open titlists, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 in one hour and 34 minutes on Saturday at The O2 in London.
Dodig struck two double faults at 4-4 in the first set, which included three deciding deuce points, en route to being broken. Lindstedt withstood pressure on his serve in the second set, but faltered in the 10th game. Dodig and Melo won six of the first seven points in the Match tie-break, highlighted by a superb forehand return winner from Dodig at 8/5. Lindstedt moved to cross, slightly early, and Dodig seized the chance to strike a fine winner down the line.
Dodig and Melo have a 30-20 team record on the season, including three runner-up finishes at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters (l. to Bryans), the Rogers Cup in Toronto (l. to Peya-Soares), and also the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo (l. to Herbert-Przysiezny).
Lindstedt and Kubot went undefeated (3-0) in Group A round-robin play this week on their first team appearance at the season finale. The duo finish their season with a 20-17 team record.
